On Monday this past week, I conducted my second research interview. It was very informative as this attorney opened a new perspective on tort reform that I had not yet discovered. The major idea I learned from my discussion with this medical malpractice attorney was that there are not always two sides to a story, but sometimes three.
Before my meeting with him, I thought that doctors, attorneys, and insurance companies were either for or against tort reform all together. However, when we began the interview, this attorney stated that he believed the medical malpractice crisis of 2003 was a manufactured crisis by insurance companies. He believed they theorized a crisis to justify raising their insurance rates.
I was taken aback as he began explaining his perspective on tort reform because up until this point, I thought I had heard it all. Also, for my Original Work, I previously decided to group attorneys into one category. However, seeing as the two lawyers I have met with hold conflicting opinions, I realized I will have to split attorneys up into two groups: plaintiff and defense.
Overall, this research interview was extremely important for both my understanding of tort reform and in the creation of my Original Work.
